Samuel Alito as a Supreme Court Justice?

"As we gather here this evening one of the most momentous decisions of our lifetime will be made next week by the United States Senate. Next week the Senate will vote on whether to confirm Samuel Alito as a Supreme Court Justice. The Administration has indicated that it is confident that he will be approved by the Republican Senate and they expect all Republicans, including Olympia Snowe will support his nomination."

"The confirmation of Samuel Alito will create a young conservative coalition on the Supreme Court which will dramatically impact our lives and the lives of our children. Judge Alito has said that he perceives his role as a member of the Supreme Court to be the strict interpretation of the laws enacted by Congress. He does not perceive an obligation to read beyond the words of the law or the Constitution to find the true intent of the law, the search for Justice. He ignores the fact that the laws of this land are not sent down from the Mount, but rather are created by human beings and as such are fallible. The purpose of the law is to bring justice and equity to citizens of our society and it is Mr. Alito’s role as a member of the Supreme Court to see that the purpose of the law is met."

"The failure of the Supreme Court to see that Justice is done, calls upon us to deliver a Democratically controlled Senate to serve as a counterpoise. A Senate which pays special attention to drafting the law in such a manner that the Supreme Court is compelled to interpret the law in a manner which will ensure that the social contract is honored and the rights and liberties guaranteed by our constitution are protected."
